On March 1st, Justin Beiber (@justinbieber) turned 18. If you're on Twitter, you know that can only mean one thing. He's "Beliebers" would be sure to make his birthday a trending topic. Needless to say that his 18+ million followers, in addition to all the people who don't like him, who tweeted about everyone else tweeting about him, made this a reality.

Fans were tweeting all day wish Justin a happy birthday. He replied to a few and retweeted a bunch, including fellow celebrities:

  1. I will admit that I was one of those Tweeters that posted about Justin's birthday. I am a fan of his, and my friends always joke about how it was "cradle robbing" so I went a little overboard and was constantly posting about how great it was that he was going to be "legal".
It was a great thing that he did to try to inspire people to give to others on his birthday, but honestly like he really needs any gifts. I found it to be really interesting though that his birthday was trending longer than the actual "event" itself.

  2. If it were up to all the Beliebers, Justin would be trending on a daily basis. I’m somewhat surprised that he’s not! I think he has the ability to reach more people in a single minute than anyone else in the world! With his vast number of followers, he receives thousands upon thousands of retweets a day. So when he uses his Twitter account to spread awareness for causes he believes in, he can easily get things trending. It’s amazing how many people a single tweet or trending topic can reach. Even if it is just a birthday!

  3. The fact that Justin Bieber’s birthday was a trending topic just goes to show the power of his network. I’m really glad he used his network to make a positive change. I’m sure many of his devout followers actually donated to Charity Water. I’d love to find out how much money was donated on that day (or two days, since his birthday was a trending topic for more than 24 hours). Social media is a great way for celebrities to promote charities. Ellen DeGeneres often retweets anything that benefits a certain cause. I wonder how often Bieber tweets about charities. People, like Bieber, are some of the best brand ambassadors for raising awareness and getting people to donate.

  4. Not only are businesses using Twitter to help get closer to their consumers, but celebrities are also marketing themselves using Twitter and gaining more of a connection with their fans. The fact that Bieber's birthday was a trending topic shows how much social media has been able to close the gap between people who may have never connected before. I think it was a great and very noble thing to promote a charity on his birthday; he was gaining so much attention why not use it to help promote something that can improve our world. I believe that goes to show his character and his beliefs. Great topic to blog about; celebrities are very prominent on social media sites and have such an impact on what consumers and tweeters are all talking about.

  5. It still amazes me the reach of Justin Bieber's popularity. I followed him on Twitter for about a week before I had to unfollow him due to the fact that he had to many retweets and mentions and what not from fans that were cluttering up my news feed. Regardless, if anyone can have something trending about on Twitter it is him and it will be interesting to see how his twitter life evolves over the years.

  6. I agree with Kathleen in that Justin Beiber's birthday really shows the power of Twitter. It gives ordinary people the opportunity to connect with a superstar, even if it is just for a moment. I can tell you from first hand experience that it is really really exciting to have a celebrity retweet or, even better, respond to your tweet. I can only imagine what it was like for anyone that Beiber responded to. I am not really a Beiber fan, but I do have to give the kid credit that he took time on his birthday to tweet about making a change. I think that a lot of people don't take him seriously because he is so young, looks even younger, and is basically a teen girl heart-throb. He proved that he is a lot more than that. I for one would have never known anything about his more serious side without Twitter. Like I have asserted in my own blog, Twitter really gives celebrities the opportunity to show who they really are, and that is what is truly special about the trending phenomenon you posted about.
